MOBILE APP

Millions of people continue to suffer from malaria each year. There has been significant progress in scaling up access to bed nets, anti-malarials and other preventative measures, but malaria still claims the lives of over 400k people in the world’s poorest countries yearly. In Africa, one child dies every two minutes. To address this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set a target to cut malaria cases and deaths by at least 90% by 2020. Mission in hand, we partnered with GSK to develop a mobile screening tool. No bells, no whistles, no internet connection — no problem.

The insight.

Preventative measures like bed nets, rapid diagnosis and treatment all work in the fights against Malaria – but the hard part is making sure people can get access to these tools where they need them, when they need them.

Help from above.

With much of Africa's rural regions still without Internet access, a limited partnership with Project Loon provided a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to extend Internet connectivity with screening results transmitted up to the nearest balloon, relayed across the balloon network, and then back down to users on the ground.
